Project Type
Installation of an oak timber carport on Techno metal post: a self-build project.
Location
NG2, South Nottingham
Challenges
The site was located very close to several trees, whose root systems had to be protected. As a result, the local authorities did not allow concrete foundations.
It was also important to avoid damaging an existing driveway, while adapting to a clay soil that is prone to swelling due to moisture.
The client, a self-builder working with his architect, needed a quick-to-install solution, with minimal environmental impact, allowing for immediate construction.
Solutions
Techno Metal Post UK installed 11 P3-12 helical piles using our compact EM1 machine, with no excavation required.
The piles were driven to a depth of 2 metres, through 40 cm of rubble (including bricks, gravel, and roots), down to a layer of firm sandy clay.
The installation torque recorded ranged from 1630 N·m to 2610 N·m, depending on the expected load for each pile.
The work was completed in just 4 hours, allowing the client to start building the wooden structure immediately after installation.
Results / Conclusion
The Techno Metal Post solution enabled a fast installation, without excavation, with no impact on nearby trees or the existing driveway. It offers long-term stability and helps reduce the risks linked to movement in clay soil.
The client was able to begin construction without delay and shared their feedback:
"All the trees are still thriving. I was very pleased with the piles you installed and the service you provided."
