Project Type
Installation of helical piles by Techno Metal Post Oxford to support a semi-submerged hydrotherapy pool house in South Oxfordshire, UK.
Location
South Oxfordshire, England (UK)
Challenges
Techno Metal Post Oxford was called in by the Architect after construction of a semi-submerged hydrotherapy pool house was temporarily halted. The contractors had unexpectedly encountered running sands and gravel, creating challenging ground conditions for the planned construction. Techno Metal Post Oxford proposed a helical pile slab solution to support the pool house, providing an alternative foundation system suited to the conditions encountered on site. The proposal was accepted by both the Architect and Structural Engineer, allowing the project to move forward.
Solutions
- Installation of 30 helical piles to support the pool house
- Piles installed and tested at groundwater level
- Use of two installation machines simultaneously to accelerate the works
- Principal contractor lowered the machines into the 2-metre-deep excavation to reach the required working level
Result / Conclusion
Techno Metal Post Oxford successfully installed and tested all 30 helical piles at groundwater level within just two days. By using two installation machines simultaneously, the team was able to accelerate the installation and efficiently work within the existing 2-metre-deep excavation.
The helical pile solution provided a suitable foundation system for the semi-submerged hydrotherapy pool house, offering an effective alternative following the unexpected discovery of running sands and gravel.
This project demonstrates the flexibility of Techno Metal Post’s helical pile foundation systems, particularly where unexpected ground conditions, restricted access and demanding installation environments require a practical and efficient foundation solution.
