In response to coastal erosion, the commune of Vieux-Boucau has implemented a coastal strip strategy (a project focused on beach monitoring) using Techno Metal Posts.
The Techno Pieux Landes team installed helical piles for 2 graduated posts (rulers) on Vieux Boucau's North and Central beaches, which are intended to serve as indicators of shoreline changes.
Thanks to these two rulers, the level of sand in relation to a GLF coastline can be monitored over time, to track the movement of sand coming in and out during storms. These geolocated rulers can also be used to monitor the shoreline's change.
Year: March 2024
Contractor: Techno Pieux Landes
Customer: Vieux Boucau municipality - Landes - France
Location address: Vieux Boucau Central Beach and North Beach
Project objectives:
- Know the sand height at all times without the need for a DGPS
- Raise user awareness of coastal changes
- Be able to withstand storms to record reliable, long-lasting data.
Special challenges:
- Working within a given timeframe based on the tides: a concrete-free foundation was the obvious solution.
- Respecting the dune with small-scale installation equipment.
- Accommodate a 4 m pine post on the pile plate from elevation +5m to +9m GLF.
Advantages compared with other methods:
- The installation can be removed and leaves no trace in the ground.
- Techno Metal Post generates no waste, since it can be recycled in the workshop.
Soil type: Sandy
Installation time: 2 days due to tides
Number of people on site: 1 installer - 1 welder
Materials used: P5-12 galvanized helical piles
Equipment used: EM2 installation equipment
Bearing capacity: 2000 psi
Driving depth: The piles were installed at a depth of 2m below 0 GLF, with a total installed length of 7m.
