The green sleeve plays a crucial role, especially during the first two to three years after you've installed your piles. During their installation, piles inevitably cause the soil around them to shift slightly. Even though this disturbance is minimal, it can still create a zone where water can infiltrate around the pile.
During a typical freeze-thaw cycle, this pooled water can reduce the soil's ability to counteract uplift forces. Which then puts an upward pressure on the pile, causing it to heave. This is precisely why the green sleeve is used - to mitigate this effect.
Since the sleeve slides upward during the freezing and thawing cycle, you can easily access it to trim off the excess and improve the pile’s appearance.
Over the years, the soil naturally reconsolidates as the seasons change. This gradual process reduces water infiltration and improves the soil’s ability to counteract upward pressure caused by freezing. As a result, even if the sleeve deteriorates or becomes partially removed after a few years, the ground around the pile is well consolidated, allowing the pile to remain stable and effective over the long term.
